Wave Skirt from Interweave Knits Spring 2005
I bought the yarn for this skirt last Spring (2005, obviously), started it, but it was just too small and the next size up was way too big. I ended up frogging it and using the yarn for the Monk’s Travel Satchel (another IK pattern-still in progress).
Then yesterday I was feeling inspired, I really liked the skirt pattern and it’s been a whole year. I feel much more confident in my abilities to modify patterns so I did it. I decided that I wanted it to ride on my hip bone, so I did the waist calculation from there. Then I figured out the number of increases I would need to get it from my low waist to my hips and at the same time being in the multiple of 18 for the feather/fan pattern. I worked out the math and cast-on.
As I was knitting something the woman at my LYS had mentioned to me when I first started the pattern kept ringing in my head. She said “if I did that pattern I would add butt darts”. Having only been knitting for a few months at the time I really wasn’t sure what that would entail. Now I figured I could try it out by adding some short rows.

So far so good. It took me two tries to figure it out. I put in a lifeline, but then figured that it was just stockinette so I ripped the lifeline out for the second go round (it was in my way, note to self, set lifeline below the row you’re working).
I’m going to knit another inch or so for a total of 7 inches and then start the feather and fan patterning. I still need to pick out some colors for the stripes. Yarns, Etc. really didn’t have a good color selection when I went on Saturday.

That background look exactly like my couch I take my photos on…
that didn’t work- anyway- my sock photo is here
oh yeah, it’s very similar to your couch, except your upholstery is softer!
Hey, what did you do for butt darts? One of my current projects (bottom one) uses ‘knitted-in darts’ on the back (and poss. front, but I’m only on the back!), which is just strategically placed k2togs.
I used strategically placed short rows, so I added fabric to the skirt in two spots in the back. I’m not sure how it’s going to work out. I’m not afraid to frog though! I’ll write it up soon, but basically I put them in the middle of the two panels, and added about 6 short rows, so there’s about an extra inch.
